Zimbabwe – Victoria Falls

The Stanley & Livingston Private Game Reserve

Victoria Falls is, in itself, an incredible destination, from the mighty wall of water (called ‘the smoke that thunders’) to the romance of visiting one of the seven natural wonders of the world, to the huge array of adrenaline fuelled activities on offer – bungee jumping, helicopter flights, or swimming in Devil’s Pool (a rock pool hanging over the edge of the falls), to name but a few.

Such a spectacular spot deserves a special hotel, and the Stanley and Livingstone Private Game Reserve, situated just ten minutes from the falls within a 6000 acre game reserve, it just such a place. The hotel combines modern creature comforts with Victorian opulence, allowing you enjoy both the wild adventure of an African safari holiday and the grace and refinement of another era.

With just 16 beautifully-appointed private suites and 4 chalets set among the lush green gardens, you’ll feel like you have this little slice of African wilderness almost all to yourself. Within the suites are 9 x Double, 1 x Honeymoon and 6 x Twin, including 2 x Inter-leading with a Double & Twin. All offer their own lounge and patio, air-con, satellite TV, mini bar, telephone, safe and a Victorian-styled bathroom. The Ursula’s Camp chalets offer 3 x Twin and 1 x Master with lounge, mini bar in each, swimming pool and satellite TV in the main lounge.

Roll-top baths and four poster beds, a plush bar, open fireplaces, and faultless service continue the old world luxury experience, but there’s nothing vintage about the fleet of Range Rovers standing at the ready to transport guests to the Falls or on morning and evening game drives to see the Big Five.

Days end with sundowners on a raised deck overlooking a waterhole, where guests can sip cocktails while elephants, buffalo and kudu drink their fill. In the evenings, the plush bar area is a natural gathering place and guests are encouraged to visit the handsomely-stocked wine cellar that boasts a selection of connoisseur’s favourites from France and South Africa. The elegant dining area is in a class of its own and offers the definitive fine dining experience in Victoria Falls. Service is impeccable and the food superb, with the emphasis on fresh local ingredients, lovingly prepared by a master-chef.

There’s no better place to enjoy one of the continent’s great wonders.
